UNILAG On Lockdown Ahead Of Protest
The
University of Lagos is on a lockdown at the moment following attempt by
students to protest the on-going industrial action by the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Eyewitnesses told Channels Television that armed security agents was seen at the entrance of the university with armoured personnel carriers positioned there to prevent the situation from degenerating into violence.
Meanwhile, it was gathered that motorists and other people are not able to enter or come out of the university campus because the gates are locked.
On Monday, heavily-armed policemen were seen patrolling the campus, while about 10 police vans were stationed at the school gate.
It was gathered that the mobilization for the protest was done via the social networks late last week, to show their support for the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and for the government to honour the agreement so that universities all over the country could resume for normal academic activities.
ASUU has been on strike since June 1, 2013 following the inability of the Nigerian Government to honour the agreement it signed with the union in 2009.
